Battery system development of the Aston Martin Rapide E
APC funded project to develop a UK battery supply chain & establish Hyperbat capability.
The programme
Battery system development of the Aston Martin Rapide E concept vehicle – setting the benchmark for performance Battery Electric Vehicles in 2018.
This was an APC funded project to develop a UK battery supply chain and was the birth of Hyperbat, combining a battery pack designed by Williams Advanced Engineering (now Fortescue Zero) and applying Unipart Manufacturing’s Tier 1 manufacturing expertise to battery production.
The 800-volt battery architecture with a 65khw capacity was designed to produce the equivalent of 600bhp, offering top speeds of 155mph and a 200 mile range.
Hyperbat value add
Significant investment in welding
Best-on-class welding capabilities established through R&D, recruitment of experts and in-house design and installation of equipment.
Deployment of the latest digital technologies
Digital twin technology implemented to monitor data for every battery component and provide digital conformance of production, ensuring no-fault-forward controls are in place.
Up-skilled workforce & established production capability
Engineers and technicians from the ICE business unit transferred to battery build with a new high voltage production facility.
